The Archdiocese of Kasama aims towards having a Local Church that is self-ministering, self-propagating and self-supporting. It focuses on Integral Evangelisation that deals with the development of the whole human person. The Strategic Plan is firmly grounded in the biblical values and the social teaching of the Church.

Inspired by the Gospel values and the social teaching of the Church, the Archdiocese of Kasama is committed to promoting integral evangelisation and creating a church which is self-reliant, self-supporting and self-ministering through its pastoral and social programmes and activities using established structures.

  1. BACKGROUND OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF KASAMA

1.1 Historical Information

The present day Archdiocese of Kasama was founded at Mambwe Mwela in 1891 by Missionaries of Africa popularly known as White Fathers. It was part of a vast Vicariate comprising Northern and Eastern Zambia and Malawi. Bishop Joseph DuPont, (M. Afr.) of French origin, famously known in local language as Motomoto – fire fire, was the first Vicar Apostolic. He became the first bishop of Zambia at Kayambi Mission in 1897.

Archdiocese of Kasama is the oldest and largest of the Zambian dioceses, having become the diocese on the 25th of April 1959 and named the archdiocese on 12th June 1967. It has many parishes and outstations. It has a general total population of 1,187,692 out of which close to 580,600 are Catholics.

1.2 Background Information

There are 960 outstations. Prior to the year 2000, the Archdiocese had 17 parishes, but after taking over four parishes from Diocese of Mpika and creating two new ones, there are now 23 parishes. There are also 7 sub-parishes.
